Modern Wedding Lighting: Transforming Flanagan Farm with Black Pendants and String Lights
The Atmosphere: A Modern Fall Wedding
When it comes to planning an elevated autumnal wedding, lighting is an effective way to shift the mood from a classic ceremony to an unforgettable celebration. For Caitlin and Justin’s fall wedding at Flanagan Farm, Lani Toscano blended the rustic charm of a Maine barn with a sharp, contemporary edge.
The evening began under the soft, romantic glow of string light with contemporary black pendant lighting in the reception tent and transitioned into a high-energy party under a canopy of lights in the dancing barn.
Design Detail: Why Modern Black Pendants?
One of the standout features of this reception was the use of modern black pendants suspended over the long dining tables. While traditional chandeliers are a popular choice for tented weddings, these sleek, geometric fixtures provided several design advantages:
- Striking Focal Points: The dark finish of the pendants popped against the white sailcloth tent, creating a sophisticated “spine” of light that drew the eye through the room.
- Directional Illumination: Unlike ambient string lights, these pendants provided focused light directly onto the guest tables, highlighting the lush floral arrangements from The Studio Atelier by LTD.
- Contemporary Contrast: The modern hardware perfectly balanced the elevated autumnal color palette, proving that fall weddings in Maine can be as chic as they are cozy.
The Elevated Autumnal Aesthetic
Caitlin and Justin moved away from typical harvest themes in favor of a palette that felt rich and high-fashion. By pairing deep greens and earthy tones with the metallic and matte black finishes of the lighting, the design felt grounded yet airy. This look was further enhanced by the BBJ La Tavola and Nuage Designs linens, which caught the warm light of the pendants to create a glowing, intimate dinner setting.
The Dancing Barn: A Canopy of Light
As the sun set, the celebration moved into the Flanagan Farm dancing barn. To keep the energy high and the dance floor magnetic, we installed a glowing canopy of string lights that accentuated the barn’s rustic timber frame with a warm, rhythmic radiance. This layered approach, combining functional task lighting in the tent with atmospheric ambient lighting in the barn, ensures that every phase of the wedding feels intentional and beautifully framed for photography.
G&G Pro-Tip: When using a sailcloth tent, remember that the fabric acts as a giant reflector. Combining black pendants with string lights allows you to control the “glow” of the tent while keeping the light on the tables crisp and clear for photos.
