Tented Wedding Lighting Ideas: How to Use String Lights and Disco Balls for a High-End Glow

When designing for a large-scale tented reception, the primary challenge is making the space feel unique and intimate as the sun sets.  For Kristin and Chris’s vibrant summer wedding, expertly planned and designed by Marrero Events, our team at Griffin & Griffin focused on a multi-layered lighting production strategy. We moved beyond simple illumination to create a textured environment that balanced classic romance with high-energy celebration.

The Warmth of Classic String Lights

Working in harmony with the bold, eclectic floral designs by White Moss and Twigs and rich, colorful textiles, we prioritized a “living glow.” Overhead, we installed a sprawling canopy of classic string lights. These amber-toned strands acted as a secondary ceiling, grounding the high peaks of the tent and creating a sense of overhead intimacy that mimicked a starlit sky. This foundational layer ensured that the dinner hour felt warm and conversational, highlighting the intricate tabletop details and custom linens without overpowering the room.

Shimmer and Energy: The Custom Mirror Disco Ball Installation

We installed a tiered arrangement of shimmering spheres that captured every stray beam of light, scattering a playful, dynamic sparkle across the tent’s interior. Mirror balls are always a great addition to wedding reception designs, bridging the gap between the dining area and the electric atmosphere of the party.

A Holistic Production Philosophy

This layered approach is a core part of our production philosophy at Griffin & Griffin. By collaborating closely with the entire creative team, we ensure the design feels as immersive and high-end in person as it looks in these stunning captures by Danforth Neal Photography. Our goal is always to provide the technical backbone that allows the aesthetic vision to truly shine.
