Industrial Elegance: A Black-Tie Wedding Transformation at Brick South
When we step into a venue as expansive and raw as Brick South at Thompson’s Point, we don’t just see a warehouse; we see a 25,000-square-foot blank canvas. For Jillian and Sam’s summer wedding, the vision was clear: maintain the iconic industrial character of the Portland, Maine waterfront while introducing a sophisticated layer of black-tie elegance.
Zoning a Massive Space for Intimacy
One of the biggest challenges with a venue of this scale is making a guest list feel gathered rather than scattered. Working alongside the talented team at Pinch Me Planning, we helped “zone” the warehouse to create a sense of flow and intimacy.
Our team installed extensive white fabric draping to soften the steel-and-brick architecture. These installations served two purposes: they acted as a stunning visual focal point and functioned as soft “walls” that guided guests naturally from the cocktail hour toward the grand reception area.
Layered Lighting: From Industrial to High-End
To complement the crisp black-and-white color palette, a multi-layered lighting design was implemented.. In a space with soaring ceilings, light is the most effective tool for “lowering” the visual plane and making the room feel warm.
- The Canopy: We hung strands of warm string lights to create a glowing “ceiling” above the festivities, adding a touch of whimsy to the industrial rafters.
- The Focal Points: Modern, tiered chandeliers were positioned strategically over the dining areas. These served as sophisticated anchors, bringing a classic “black-tie” ballroom feel into the rugged warehouse environment.
Balancing Grandeur and Personal Connection
By balancing the sheer height of the rafters with the softness of the fabric and the warmth of the bulbs, we curated an atmosphere that felt both grand and deeply personal. Jillian and Sam’s wedding proved that with the right lighting and structural design, even the most expansive industrial space can feel like a private, high-end sanctuary.
