Luxury Tent Design at The Edge Maine: Custom Plum Drum Shades and Fringe Installations

The coast of Lincolnville, Maine, offers a dramatic backdrop that requires a design of equal caliber. For Alison and Colin’s reception at The Edge, we moved beyond traditional illumination to create a fully immersive environment. Working with the team at Landfall Designs, our goal was to transform a classic sailcloth tent into a space that felt architectural, intimate, and unexpectedly whimsical.

Texture and Depth: The Plum Drum Shades

To bring a sense of regal weight to the airy white canopy, we curated a series of custom plum-colored drum shades. These weren’t just lighting fixtures; they were a textile-driven design choice that mirrored the sophisticated floral palette by Flora Fauna.

Strategically suspended throughout the reception tent and over the custom bar, these shades provided a rich pop of color during the day. As evening fell, they cast a soft, downward glow that grounded the vastness of the tent, making the large-scale dining area feel like a private, boutique lounge.

Kinetic Design: The Custom Fringe Installation

The true centerpiece of the evening was the custom fringe installation suspended over the dance floor. This structural element added a layer of modern whimsy that contrasted beautifully with the rugged coastal landscape.

The fringe created a sense of “kinetic architecture” – it caught the coastal breeze and reflected the movement of the guests below. By pairing this installation with our integrated lighting, we created a focal point that signaled a shift in energy from a sophisticated dinner to a high-energy celebration.

Bringing the Outside In

To soften the transition from the ocean views into the tented space, Griffin & Griffin provided live trees and custom draping. The inclusion of greenery added an organic, grounded element to the design, while the draping served to soften the tent’s structural lines.

This project perfectly illustrates how our services work in harmony. It wasn’t just about the light; it was about how the light interacted with the movement of the fringe, the texture of the plum fabric, and the natural silhouettes of the live greenery.
